Repertoire in the creative circus: Issues and challenges for the sector
Seminar as part of the European Digital Soul Protocol project organized by Maison des Jonglages

The notion of heritage in the circus is still in its infancy, subjective, often recognized and studied only by insiders. The artists themselves are just as much part of informal, personal, subjective genealogies that are seldom asserted. Indeed, to assert a kinship or a family is still a daring gesture, almost risking losing one’s creative originality, one’s identity as an author.

Yet in many other arts and disciplines, such as contemporary art, homages, quotations, motifs, thematic influences, iterations, derivations and detour are widely accepted as forces contributing to the creative process and the inscription of works in a traceable continuum that writes history.

Panel 1 – Diving into the source code of a circus work and confronting the notion of repertoire: Feedback

Artists and researchers share their experiences, issues and challenges, asserting a kinship, a filiation and establishing a protocol, a strategy, to (re)activate a circus work.

With : Erik Bordeleau, Mathieu Antajan (CNAC), Maroussia Diaz Verbeke, Antonia Kuzmanić

Panel 2 – Preparing the reformulation of a circus work: From moral agreement to toolbox, a generous and sensitive adventure?

Artists anticipate the aesthetic and concrete consequences of varying one of their works: the potential for reworking the piece, the minimal traces required, protocols, rules, copyright…

With : Edouard Peurichard, Dries Vanwalle (Sinking Sideaways), Mathieu Despoisse (Pling-Klang)

Think Circus! #4
European Conference on Contemporary Circus by circusnext

For this 4th edition, Think Circus! examines the notion of the contemporary circus artist-author and innovative writing in this field.

How can we find our uniqueness in a teeming, ever-changing artistic landscape? In the creative process, how can we emancipate ourselves from our apprenticeships and transform our references? What kind of balance can we hope for between authors, programmers and audiences, so as to leave room for artistic risk-taking, which is essential to the renewal of new writing?

Artists and professionals from the performing arts meet to discuss these issues at the heart of circusnext’s European tracking system.

Panel 1 – From the construction of the author’s artistic identity to the renewal of writing

Focus on the journey of the contemporary circus artist, from training to the expression of artistic singularity. How does one free oneself from influences to build one’s own identity? Learning and unlearning, inspiration and emancipation: a quest for balance in the creation of new artistic forms.

With : Antonia Kuzmanic, Delphine Lanson, Claudio Stellato

Panel 2 – The role of programmers in the emergence of new writing and the question of risk-sharing with artists-authors

Analysis of the issues involved in producing, distributing and financing new circus new circus forms: the responsibility of programmers in supporting new writing, their role in production and programming, and the need to reconcile artistic innovation with audience expectations.

With : Tim Behren, Caroline Sotta
