  • Creation 2025, In situ, Long form, Public space

We want everything to be here and now.

To do this, we’re building a new, out-of-the-ordinary performance in a given space and time: a Campement for our juggled improvisation work. For one day, this performance doesn’t stop. The public is not invited to attend, but to participate. Continuing the artistic process initiated by the collective, we confirm our orientation towards unconventional forms and long, even very long, performances. This particular format helps build our artistic identity. We have a taste for the unprecedented, a desire to explore the infinite range of possible improvisation protocols, and a desire to surprise and touch audiences. We continue to feed gargantuanly on the experiences of the living, and our appetite remains insatiable. In our brains alone, life and its expressions are catalogued and archived to enrich our artistic eloquence again and again.

Collectif Protocole

Collectif Protocole questions and explores juggling through instantaneous composition in the public space. It’s made up of 5 male and 1 female juggler, all of whom share the same juggling object: the white club. Since 2011, the group has come together to work in a research laboratory and give site-specific performances. In 2012, he began offering his One Shot performance, a non-reproducible all-terrain show co-constructed with the host structure (40 minutes in a fixed location, 5 minutes in a miniature space, lightning urban attacks, in situ itinerary, 4 hours non-stop).

In 2017, the collective produced Monument, a 4-day show for four male and one female jugglers, a musician, a guest musician and local participants. Monument is a juggled poetic investigation whose active setting is the city and whose extras are its inhabitants. The show is a 2017 winner of the SACD “auteurs d’espaces” prize. It is played at major festivals in France and abroad.

From 2016 to 2018, over a 3-year period, Collectif Protocole created Monument en Partage, an artistic and cultural project to accompany the construction of the îlot du Marché, in the heart of the Quatre Routes district of La Courneuve, with Hélène Motteau (photography), Double-M (architecture), students from the Master 2 PCEP / Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and Maison des Jonglages (coordination). The aim is to work with local residents and users, as well as professionals and public policy-makers, to create a beautiful way of enchanting urban areas and taking ownership of their metamorphoses.

In 2021, the collective created Périple 2021, a 6-month continuous relay performance across France. Each week (called an “errance”), a juggler sets out to discover a territory and its inhabitants, accompanied by his three clubs and a non-juggling guest. At the end of each wander, the 6 jugglers come together to offer a ceremony with an invited audience: in the manner of an Olympic flame, the arriving artist passes on the three clubs to the next for the coming week. This handover will take place 23 times, from mid-March to the end of August 2021. Only the 3 clubs physically make the entire journey. A web platform allows you to follow the juggler live and experience the journey through France with him or her.

The show is a 2019 winner of the SACD “Ecrire pour la rue” grant.

Since 2019, Collectif Protocole has been an associate artist of La Verrerie d’Alès for three years.
