In INERTIA, the focus is on matter: its states, its transformation, its cycle, and its recycling. Matter will be manipulated primarily through chemical processes, requiring a smaller space that lends itself to working on details and reactions.
For the first time, Jani Nuutinen explores video. The camera becomes our eyes, like a microscope that allows us to penetrate to the heart of matter to observe its structure, reactions, and transformations. The combination of this visual approach, chemistry, and circus makes the show particularly well-suited and engaging for a school audience.
INERTIA will be a smaller-scale solo performance. The music, composed by the same musicians as for INERTIUM, will be played from a soundtrack. The performance retains the circular layout in the tiered seating used for INERTIUM, but in a more intimate configuration, suited to smaller spaces and a smaller crew.
Circo Aereo
Jani Nuutinen is a Finnish circus artist, director, and set designer. A 2001 graduate of the CNAC and co-founder of Circo Aereo, Jani has developed a personal and minimalist theatrical language that blends juggling, object theater, mental magic, and set design conceived as a narrative framework.
A master of detail and atmosphere, Jani Nuutinen has contributed to the emergence of “object circus”—a poetic form in which props, very often crafted specifically by him, define a timeless space with an old-fashioned yet familiar charm. His approach, reminiscent of shadow theater, brings out the extraordinary in the ordinary.
He often designs his own big tops, making them a central element of the set design; for him, thinking about the circus means thinking about the stage space.
He has received numerous awards: the Finnish State Art Prize (2005), the SACD Circus Prize (2012), the Pro Finlandia Medal (2021), and the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Arts and Letters in France (2022).
