Two people in front of you: Étienne Manceau and Mathieu Despoisse.
This project focuses on a word, a notion, for which each person has their own definition: Couple.
So we asked ourselves how we could approach the social invention of the couple through and for a show.
And it was while pondering the various challenges that couples face that one of them caught our attention: assembling an IKEA piece of furniture.
This will be the focus of our show.
An absurd, intimate and playful challenge.

Mathieu Despoisse & Etienne Manceau

Etienne Manceau, a 2003 graduate of Toulouse’s Lido circus school, and Mathieu Despoisse, a 2003 graduate of the CNAC.

Over the course of our encounters at various festivals, and in particular during a long stint at Avignon in 2015, we became friends and became sensitive to each other’s artistic proposals.

For 12 years now, Etienne has been working solo on stage. He wrote and performed Vu et VRAI with Sacékripa, two minimalist, radical shows. Mastery of gesture and power of detail underpin a thick, sometimes dark dramatic tension.

For a long time, Mathieu’s work was expressed under the big top, in the luminous, overflowing forms of Cheptel Aleikoum, before moving on to a new, more intimate form with Dad is Dead, a kind of closed-door bicycle show questioning militancy and sexual identity.

Our friendship in life and our very different ways of approaching work and aesthetics on stage led to the desire to collaborate together on Pling-Klang.
