Three top jugglers reveal what we don’t usually show you: the failure behind the success. In a series of hypnotic choreographies, their mistakes are brought to light. Juggling balls become powerful metaphors for the way we deal with pressure, missteps and the gaze of others.
With playful timing, precise movement and humor, Droplines is an intimate, unexpected celebration of imperfection and an ode to the fallible human being.
“Try again. Fail again. Fail better” – Samuel Beckett.
Tall Tales Company
Tall Tales Company was founded in 2012 by Maartje Bonarius and Harm van der Laan, acrobatic duo and former students of Rotterdam’s Codarts circus school. The company creates unique forms of circus performance in which broad themes such as object circus and acrobatics are used to tell recognizable and personal stories.
Fascinated by human nature, the company presents performances that are accessible on many levels: magical, daring or even with a touch of humor. Originally a small company, Tall Tales has now become a major player on the national circus scene, with a unique creative repertoire and a wide range of different performances.
Tall Tales’ performances, which take place around 100 times a year, can be seen at festivals and theaters, but also in extraordinary places such as forests, churches and squares.
Tall Tales Company is fascinated by people, by the impact they have on each other, but also on the world around them. Previous shows have been about people who are together but lonely, about the relationship between humans and algorithms, or about how society can deal with violence.
Circus is the language of storytelling, an exciting, emotionally-charged language, but also a language that hardly anyone speaks, but that everyone can understand. Tall Tales conveys these themes through human stories. These can be existing stories(A Clockwork Orange), new scenarios(Langs) or players’ personal anecdotes(Facades). The stories are conveyed through the theatrical layer, which is integrated into the circus movements. An acrobat standing over another acrobat can say something about power relationships, trust, benevolence or violence. Just as a mime dissects a hand movement to reveal subtle differences in meaning, Tall Tales dissects a somersault.
