What is success? Is failure a state of mind? Can I find joy and happiness in my struggle? If the object doesn’t care if I beat it, am I really beating it? Absurd Hero reveals a delirious drama between the artist and a large 25 kg red globe. The artist repeatedly puts himself in desperate situations, at the limit of physical and emotional endurance. Inspired by Albert Camus’ myth of Sisyphus, the work presents the circus as a potentially joyous, but infinitely futile enterprise.

Roman Škadra

Roman Škadra (1985) is a Slovakian juggler and circus artist. He holds a master’s degree in geography from Bratislava’s Comenius University. In 2012, he moved to Berlin and trained in contemporary circus at Die Etage – Schule für darstellende und bildende Kunst in Berlin.
In Roman’s artistic work, various techniques merge to explore the relationship between body and object. In recent years, his practice has moved away from juggling towards the manipulation of heavy objects. Roman is part of a movement of artists who challenge the conventional perception of the circus, creating works that lie at the intersection of different art forms and are intended to be presented in a variety of contexts. He draws inspiration from literature, the visual arts, sport and human endeavor.
In 2021, Roman created Absurd Hero, his first full-length stage work.
Roman is currently in the final stages of creating his second play, Girevik. The play will premiere on February 13, 2024 at the Circopolis festival in Praga. In addition to his own work, Roman has collaborated with Stefan Sing in Critical Mess and was part of Squarehead Productions’ For As Long As We’re Here.
